Things to do when you are bored and everything feels like effort

Most advice about boredom assumes you have energy. Learn a language, start a side project, go for a run. The problem is that the kind of boredom that sends you looking for advice is usually the low-energy kind, where even choosing something feels like work.

So this list is sorted by effort rather than by how impressive the activity sounds.

Almost no effort at all

These are for when you want something to happen to you rather than to do something.

  • Watch something slow on purpose. A fire, rain on a window, a snail. The point is that nothing is asked of you.
  • Press a button that gives you a compliment or an insult. It is silly and it works.
  • Reread something you have already read. The absence of decisions is the appeal.
  • Sit somewhere different in your own home. It is a surprisingly effective reset.

A little effort, mostly physical

The trick here is picking something with a definite end. Boredom gets worse when a task has no edges.

  • Clean one specific thing. Not the kitchen, one drawer. The smallness is what makes it possible.
  • Walk to a shop and buy one item. The errand gives the walk a reason.
  • Make a drink properly rather than quickly. Grind the coffee, warm the pot, whatever your version is.
  • Move furniture six inches. You will notice it for a week.

A little effort, mostly mental

These take about the same energy as scrolling, but leave you feeling different afterwards.

  • Write down every place you have ever lived and one thing you remember about each.
  • Look up how something ordinary works. Traffic lights. Bread. Postcodes.
  • Plan a trip you will not take. Full detail. Hotels and everything.
  • Message somebody you have not spoken to in a year with no agenda.

Why this is worth doing at all

Boredom is not the same as having nothing to do. It is usually a gap between what your attention wants and what is in front of it. That is why scrolling rarely fixes it: the input is constant but shallow, so the gap stays open.

Anything with a shape to it tends to work better. A small game with an ending. A task with a finish line. Even watching something slow for twelve minutes counts, because it is a thing that starts and stops.

That is roughly what this whole site is for, if you want to try a few.
